Hindenburgdamm connecting Sylt Island with Holstein

Hindenburgdamm was constructed to join the island of Sylt with Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Earlier there was no road or causeway to reach the island and this causeway was primarily built to allow for railway transportation, and therefore, overcome the major communication problems which prevailed. Previously, the only way to connect these two lands was the water ways and the people were left at the mercy of tides. During winters, condition became worst because the water froze into ice creating an insurmountable obstacle. This problem has now been overcome after years of struggle and 100 of trains now pass through this causeway on a regular basis.
